In 2017, Nike created a collaborative colorway with DJ Khaled to celebrate both his illustrious career and the birth of his child, Asahd. Named after DJ Khaled's 2017 album, the DJ Khaled x Air Jordan 3 Retro 'Grateful' features a soft University Red leather upper with the traditional elephant print on the mudguard and heel. The pair also features additional details such as the "WE THE BEST" hangtags and Jumpman logos.

Notably, the collaboration was prominently displayed during a fan meet-and-greet and autograph session at Stadium Goods in NYC, emphasizing DJ Khaled's connection with his fans and his reputation as one of the hardest-working men in the business.

The Air Jordan 3 is credited with keeping Michael Jordan at Nike after the original Air Jordan designer, Peter Moore, left the company. Hatfield designed the shoe in close collaboration with Jordan, addressing the player’s request for a more lightweight modern shoe.
