Sotheby’s is proud to present these custom Nike sneakers match worn and dual signed by Serena Williams during her victorious 2016 Wimbledon run in London, England. The sneakers were worn by Williams during her third round, 6-3, 6-0 victory over Annika Beck.
Unbeknownst to her at the time, Williams had just secured her 300th career Grand Slam match victory with the win. When informed during a post-match interview, she responded: "Oh, was it? Cool. Oh, nice. I had no idea. That's awesome, right? I think that's a lot of matches. It's a lot of wins.” The victory moved her into second place in Open Era play behind only Martina Navratilova for career Grand Slam match wins.
Looking to defend her title from the previous year, Williams cruised through the next three rounds. In the final round, she faced Angelique Kerber, who had defeated her just months earlier in the 2016 Australian Open. It was no easy match for the six-time Wimbledon singles champion. After a hard-fought battle, Williams emerged victorious, 7–5, 6–3. The win secured her seventh Wimbledon singles title and the 22nd Grand Slam singles title of her career, tying Steffi Graf's Grand Slam Open Era Record.
The sneakers are accompanied by a photomatch letter from Sports Investors Authentication. Both signatures have been authenticated by PSA.
