Going Deeper - Mike Trout - Millville Meteor
A nickname that began as a simple Wikipedia edit, likely a nod to Mickey Mantle’s famous “Commerce Comet” designation has now become part of baseball vernacular: the “Millville Meteor.” Hailing from Millville, New Jersey, a small town of fewer than 30,000 people located about an hour south of Philadelphia, Mike Trout’s meteoric rise through the sport made the nickname a perfect fit. After the name was added to his Wikipedia page in 2012, major outlets such as Baseball Reference and SportsCenter began to pick it up and use it regularly. When asked about the nickname, Trout stated, “I don’t know where they got that.” Clearly he had no issues with it as he has since inscribed “Millville Meteor” on a limited number of memorabilia items, giving the nickname a stamp of approval.
Trout has won three American League MVPs and been named an American League All-Star 10 times. He has finished in the top 10 of the MVP voting in 10 of his first 12 seasons with the only exceptions being his rookie year and the 2021 season, in which he only played 36 games due to an injury. At the time of cataloging, Trout is two home runs away from 400 career home runs. Though Trout is just 34 years old, he is already a surefire first ballot Hall of Fame inductee.
