Description

John Mellor (Joe Strummer)

11.8 x 15.7 in. Acrylic painting on canvas by Clash lead singer Joe Strummer (real name John Mellor, as it is signed on the canvas). Gifted to present consignor—Strummer’s best friend from his school days—by Strummer himself.

Lot includes a letter from Strummer, handwritten on one side of a ruled piece of paper and signed, “They say we can’t play Rock n Roll / love Johnny Mellor’s the name / and mellor’s [sic] the game.” Letter details goings-on in Strummer’s life at the time and mentions an early band he planned to form called J. Edgar Hoover and the Meatballs.

TOGETHER WITH

A set of 2 black and white photographs measuring 7 x 9 in each of Strummer performing on stage, as well as a Christmas card with a drawing done by Strummer in red paint. The inside of the card is inscribed, “To Kenny, SO YOU DIDN’T / GET A RONSON / SHAVER FOR XMAS / From John / NEVERMIND - HAPPY NEW YEAR” in blue and black ink.
