End-of-year progress report from Eddie Van Halen’s fourth-grade year (1964-1965) at Hamilton Elementary School in Pasadena, California. Signed by Jan Van Halen, Eddie’s father.

As documented in this progress report, Van Halen clearly exhibited an early interest in music. He made a mix of good and average marks, achieving C’s, B-minuses, and B’s in most subjects. There were fitting exceptions to his less-than-excellent academic performance, notably in Spelling and Music, where he ended the year with A’s in both. He also received an A in Instrumental Music, what appears as a supplementary elective course.

It is interesting to note that Van Halen performed better in Instrumental Music (across the board as well as in comparison with Music generally), an early sign of the virtuosic musicianship he would come to be known for as a guitarist.
