Formerly attributed to Massimo Stanzione (1585–1656), this work was identified by Nicola Spinosa as a painting by the little-known Neapolitan artist Pompeo Caracciolo. According to his early biographer, Bernardo De Dominici, he was the son of the celebrated Battistello Caracciolo (1578–1635), with whom he is said to have collaborated on several public commissions. This canvas is one of only three known works by the artist, and the only one executed on a small scale. The two others are monumental altarpieces, respectively: Saint Simeon recognising Jesus,1 in the Church of San Simeone Profeta, Marcianise, and The Vision of Saint Thomas, signed and dated 1645, in the Church of Santa Maria delle Grazie, Sorrento.
