Of noble Genoese birth, Paggi fled his hometown in 1581, after being convicted for the murder of a patron who had failed to pay him for his work. He soon settled in Florence at the court of Francesco I de' Medici (1541–1587), where he was able to establish his artistic reputation. His patrons included some of the most powerful political figures of his day, including Niccolò di Sinibaldo Gaddi, Alessandro Segni and Pietro del Nero.
