This composition is repeated in a drawing by Pièrre Recco (1765/6–1820), today in the Städel Museum, Frankfurt.1 Although Recco spent much of his working life in Switzerland, he was was born in Amsterdam and undertook his artistic training there. He likely saw this painting while he was still in the city, therefore, as it appeared for sale in Amsterdam in 1762 (see Provenance).
