Domestic genre scenes and images of children became popular themes towards the end of the 18th century in France. Here, the artist appears to be influenced by Nicolas-Bernard Lépicié (1735–1784), in particular his portraits of children, drawing comparison with the work of his student Carle Vernet (1758–1836), son of Claude-Joseph Vernet (1714–1789).1
