This composition is closely related to a painting of The Virgin and Child with a female martyr, Saint John the Baptist and two angels by Mariotto di Nardo (act. 1364–1424), which sold at Sotheby's, London, in 1987.1 Both pictures depict the Virgin and Child at centre, flanked by saints, as well as the motif of the music-making angel seen from behind, at lower right. A very similar angel appears in The Coronation of the Virgin with five music-making angels, dated 1408, in the Minneapolis Institute of Art.2
