Description
Two Egyptian Stone Scarabs, circa 1st millennium B.C.
Both mounted in 19th-century gold mounts, one swivel, possibly with the cartouche of Tuthmosis III on the underside, 18th Dynasty, reign 1479-1426 B.C, with velvet lined leather boxes
scarabs: 2cm., ¾in. and 1.5cm., ⅝in.
mounts: 3cm., 1¼in. and 8.5cm., 3⅜in. overall
Probably Henry James Montagu-Scott, 2nd Baron Montagu of Boughton at Ditton Park (1776–1845) to his wife,
Jane Margaret Douglas, Lady Montagu (1779-1859) by descent to her eldest daughter,
The Hon. Lucy Elizabeth Montagu-Scott (1805–1877) who married Cospatrick, 11th Earl of Home (1799-1881),
thence by descent in the collection of the Earls of Home at The Hirsel, Berwickshire.

The Earl of Home [etc…], Edinburgh, February 1904, […] Content of Cabinets [The Montagu Heirlooms, 'From the Ditton Park Collection’], in the Saloon, p.4-8. there is a large group of 'antique' cameos and hardstones listed, including a 'Scarab' which could be one of the two in the present lot.
