Description

of ingot form, all sides decorated in dark blue basse taille enamel with convolvulus and periwinkle on a polished gold ground, within matching borders on an engraved tracery, the interior of the lid engraved with a presentation inscription reading: 'E.B. to E.H. Novr 21.1827' below a coronet, rubbed marker's mark, charge and discharge mark of Julien Berthe, Paris date letter,


5.5cm., 2 1/8 in. wide

Probably, Mary Montagu, Duchess of Montagu (c.1711/1712–1775) to her daughter, 

Lady Elizabeth Montagu, later Duchess of Buccleuch (1743–1827) to her daughter,

Lady Elizabeth Scott (d.1837) who married Alexander Ramey-Home, 10th Earl of Home (1769-1841),

thence by descent in the collection of the Earls of Home at The Hirsel, Berwickshire.


The engraved inscription is dated the day that Elizabeth, Duchess of Buccleuch died.
