Arthur Michael Bass, 1st Baron Burton K.C.V.O., of Burton on Trent and Rangemore (1837 -1909);

Christie's, London, 29 November 2016, lot 145;

Koopman Rare Art, London.

The crests and coronets are those of Bass for Michael Arthur Bass, 1st Baron Burton K.C.V.O., of Burton on Trent and Rangemore (1837-1909). He became a director of the family brewing firm Bass & Co. in Staffordshire in 1863. He was granted a baronetcy in 1882 and created Baron Burton of Burton on Trent and Rangemore in 1897 and served as an M.P. from 1865-1886.

The Ottawa Free Press (2 February 1902) reported his death as follows: 'Although Lord Burton was best known to the the public as the head of the famous brewing firm, his claim to be remembered is his enormous donations and charitable works. He spent the equivalent of a large fortune in improving and beautifying the town of Burton-upon-Trent. He was also a great art collector and probably no other private collection has so many gems by Reynolds, Gainsborough and Romney.'
