Thomas Philip de Grey, 3rd Baron Grantham (1781-1859) was the eldest son of Thomas Robinson, 2nd Baron Grantham (1738–1786) of Newby Hall, Yorkshire, by his wife Mary Yorke (1757–1830), the younger daughter of Philip Yorke, 2nd Earl of Hardwicke. He served in the military for over forty years and was appointed yeomanry aide-de-camp to William IV and Queen Victoria.

It is likely that he commissioned the current lot to celebrate his coming of age in 1802. The engraved coat-of-arms in an earlier style is based on that found on a silver-gilt basin and pair of ewers, marked for Benjamin Pyne, 1699, from the De Grey Silver Settlement, Christie's, London, 24 March 1982, lot 95.
