This panel is a highlight within the oeuvre of Jonas Zeuner (1727-1814), active in the late 18th century and whose work is characterised by a combination of oil paint and engraved gold and silver leaf on glass. With captivating layers of texture and light, it presents a visually striking scene that sets it apart from other works by Zeuner who often depicts cityscapes and rural landscapes.

Jonas Zeuner born on the 7th November 1727 in Kassel, Germany was registered as a canonnier when he got married in Italy in July 1750. In this year he moved to Amsterdam where he lived until his death in 1814. Between 1750 and 1770, he started with his reverse paintings. He used a mixed technique of glass painting and verre eglomisé. Examples of his work are in various museum collections, including those of the Rijksmuseum, Amsterdam and the Corning Museum of Glass, Corning, New York.

A panel dated 1776 depicting a view of the mansion 'Welgelegen' of similar size was sold at Sotheby's, Amsterdam, 27th March 2001, lot 85 (82,000 EUR).
