A Dutch boat in choppy seas off a rocky coast

oil on canvas, in a carved giltwood frame

unframed: 55.8 x 78.3 cm.; 22 x 30⅞ in.

framed: 74.3 x 96.5 cm.; 29¼ x 38 in.

Possibly John, Marquess of Monthermer (1735-1770).

thence by descent.

The Marquess acquired much on his grand tour and spent £2000 on works over 9 years from 1751. The subject of the present work may have appealed to him. Richard, Duke of Buccleuch writes of the Marquess, ‘…he was also a knowledgeable collector, and patronised a number of dealers in particular Thomas Jenkins in Rome. His purchases ranged from small intaglios to marble busts, from portrait miniatures to large seascapes’ (Boughton, The House, its People and its Collections, Hawick, 2016, p.32).
