Description
Georgiaite — Formed Over 35 Million Years Ago From the Creation of the Chesapeake Bay Impact Crater
Tektite
Georgia, U.S.A.
56 x 37 x 11 mm (2¼ x 1½ x ⅜ inches). 28.06 grams (140.3 carats).
Approximately 35.5 million years ago, a large comet or meteoroid struck the east coast of what in now the United States, creating the Chesapeake Bay impact crater and sending an incalculable amount of debris flying off of the Earth's surface. Some of that debris launched into the atmosphere at an extremely high rate of speed where it melted, cooled and re-solidified into glass on its trip back down to Earth, producing the georgiaite tektites.
Georgiaites are part of the North American tektite strewn field, and are one of only two types of tektites found there (the other being Bediasites from Texas). They would have flown hundreds of miles to their eventual resting place in Georgia and parts of South Carolina.
Georgiaites like the current example are often olive green, and the current example is particularly impressive for its size, symmetry, and translucency.
In addition to this lot, we are offering superlative tektites from two of Earth's other recognized tektite strewn fields (as well as Libyan Desert Glass): See Lots 116, 118 & 119.
