A RARE IRON METEORITE SHAPED LIKE A BIRD'S HEAD
NWA 6932 is a rare, ungrouped iron that, unlike most every other iron meteorite in existence, is made up almost entirely of plessite, the fine-grained intergrowth of the two most common iron-nickel alloys found in iron meteorites. Where one would normally expect there to be a Widmanstätten pattern across the surface of this slice, with distinct lines of kamacite and taenite clearly visible, instead one sees a uniform pattern of plessite with some kamacite crosses dotting the surface, as well as a large troilite (iron sulfide) "eye," giving this meteorite slice the uncanny look of a bird's head.
