Miao Xiao Chun | The Last Judgement in Cyberspace – The Front View

In this striking large-format print, Miao Xiao Chun digitally reimagines Italian Renaissance artist Michelangelo’s The Last Judgment by reconstructing the entire scene in a 3D virtual space.

The work faithfully follows the composition of the original fresco, with all the figures replaced with digital avatars modelled on the artist himself. The avatars’ smooth marble-like texture lends them a surrealist feeling, void of individual identity or hierarchy. The work confronts the viewer with themes of technological transformation, self-replication, and the reinterpretation of art historical canons in the digital age.

Miao Xiao Chun is a pioneering figure in Chinese new media art. He graduated from the Central Academy of Fine Arts (CAFA), Beijing in1989 and from Kunsthochschule Kassel, Germany in 1999. Since the 1990s, he has explored the relationship between classical art and emerging technologies, gaining recognition for his large-scale digital works from 2005 onwards. His work bridges historical imagery and futuristic imagination, offering new readings of art history in the

digital age. Miao has presented works at major platforms such as Shanghai Art Biennale (2002), 7th Asia-Pacific Triennial of Contemporary Art (2012), the Chinese Pavilion at the 55th Venice

Biennale (2013), B3 Biennial of the Moving Image (Frankfurt, 2017) and the Anren Biennale (2019). He has shown at institutions including the International Centre of Photography (New York), Victoria and Albert Museum (London), and Haus der Kulturen der Welt (Berlin).
