But Let There Be Space For Us To Frolic In This Unlikely Place is a work that reflects on the lived experiences of queer individuals and the vital importance of safe spaces. Visually, the work draws from the familiar architecture of Singapore’s public housing flats. A visible slit built into the work, providing a limited vantage point frames the viewer as a voyeur, evoking the tension between visibility and vulnerability that queer individuals experience when navigating public space. These spaces, however fleeting, also become sanctuaries for intimacy.

Faris Nakamura is a visual artist based in Singapore and London. His work explores the interplay among space, architecture and identity. Through his sculptures and installations, Nakamura examines structures that suggest both freedom and constraint, reflecting on how space shapes human behaviour, and their relationship to the wider socio-political environment. He has exhibited at venues such as The Substation (Singapore), Meta APAC HQ (Singapore), 80 Queen's Road Central (Hong Kong), Richard Koh Fine Art (Singapore and Kuala Lumpur), Georgetown Festival (Penang), Kobe Biennale (Japan) and Palazzo Ca’ Zanardi (Venice, Italy), among others.
