The prototype of the present lot could be the Si gui of Zhou dynasty recorded in the Xuanhe Bogutu compiled during the Huizong period (1100-1126) of the Song dynasty, which shared the similar form, except the ears, and nearly identical motif. The inscription came from the Meng Jiang gui of Zhou dynasty recorded in the same catalogue.
There are various editions of the Xuanhe Bogutu catalogue since the Song dynasty, yet the depiction of these particular prototypes showed minimal variation. Compare the si gui illustrated in the edition of the sixteenth year of Wanli, Ming dynasty, corresponding to year 1588, vol. 17, p. 3, and the inscription of the Meng Jiang gui in vol. 17, p.18.
