Emily Sargent was an accomplished artist, known for her exceptional skill in watercolor. Sargent was trained informally alongside her older brother, the leading American watercolorist of the nineteenth and early-twentieth century, John Singer Sargent. Emily Sargent had a keen eye for light and landscape, and the artist frequently depicted scenes from her travels across Europe and North Africa. The present work is an exquisite example of Sargent’s keen interest in North African landscapes. Characterized by a fluid and atmospheric style, the present watercolor captures the essence of the locale to which Sargent pays homage. The present work is entirely fresh to market, and has been in the same private hands for over five decades, descending through the family of the artist.
