A longtime resident of the famed mountain town Darjeeling, M. Sain was a Bengali artist most active during the middle decades of the 20th century. Sain was a Renaissance man, researching and writing a book on the flora of the Himalayas, creating hand-painted photographs that capture the people and scenery of West Bengal and producing oil paintings in the realist tradition of artists such as Jamini Prakash Gangooly. The current lot includes two fine examples of such oil paintings, both of which depict breathtaking Himalayan landscapes.
