Emerging in the early 2000s as one of Germany’s most distinctive figurative painters, Norbert Bisky gained international attention for his explosive compositions blending youth, idealised beauty and chaos. A student of Georg Baselitz at the Universität der Künste in Berlin, Bisky developed a visual language rooted in the propaganda aesthetics of his East German past, while subverting their utopian promises with a contemporary edge.
Heimatglück (2001) captures the core of Bisky’s early practice: vibrant colour, youthful bodies, and an ambiguous narrative charged with tension. The title, translating to "home happiness," evokes a sense of nostalgia, yet the scene teeters between dream and disintegration. Bisky has described his practice by stating, “My paintings are not realistic. I paint imaginations, not reality.” (Peter Herbstreuth, Nobert Bisky. Only one can call the shots, Frankfurt (Oder) 2002, p. 9)
Executed at a formative moment in the artist’s career, the work exemplifies his unique synthesis of personal history and critical reflection, rendered in a style that oscillates between celebration and critique. Works from this period are held in significant institutional collections, including the Museum Ludwig, Cologne, and the Museum der Bildenden Künste, Leipzig.
