This painting was purchased by the novelist Hugh Walpole, a great admirer of Grant’s work of which he owned several examples. The painting shows a shelf and mirror at Charleston, the objects including a French pharmacists jar which made a memorable appearance in Vanessa Bell’s early work Iceland Poppies (Charleston).
