The present work is one of three watercolours made by Paul Nash of a pond in the grounds of Furzebrook House, Wareham, Dorset. It was an old clay pit, hence the extraordinary colour of the water, and was mentioned by the artist in his book Dorset Shell Guide (1936), where he wrote it 'must be seen to be believed'.
