Fry’s visit during the First World War to the South of France where he stayed initially with Simon and Dorothy Bussy in Roquebrune, in Spring 1915, is notable for a substantial group of brilliantly coloured works. We do not know the exact location of this freely painted scene of three children on the grass in front of a farm building. It is likely to be the hillside village of St Agnès, perched high above Menton, where Fry painted several works. Later he visited other Mediterranean towns such as St Tropez and Cassis to which he frequently returned after the War.
