Thence by descent to the present owner

From the early 1950s onwards, Roger-Edgar Gillet (1924–2004) was very much in evidence in Parisian galleries, championed by critics Michel Tapié and Charles Estienne. In 1955, the Catherwood Prize enabled him to travel to the United States and discover its great museums. Upon his return, he joined the Galerie de France, and Théo and Ulla Ahrenberg, great Swedish collectors, purchased gouaches and five paintings from him, including this one.

From 1964 onwards, Roger-Edgar Gillet evolved towards expressive figuration, which the dealer Jean Pollak (Galerie Ariel) exhibited in France and internationally. Today, the Nathalie Obadia (Paris/Brussels), Rodolphe Janssen (Brussels) and Petzel Gallery (New York) galleries represent this artist, who will be exhibited in 2026 at the Musée des Beaux-Arts in Rennes and the Musée Estrine in Saint Rémy de Provence.
