As stated in the catalogue raisonné of the artist, in 1961 Sam Francis was hospitalized for most of the year in Bern, Switzerland Tiefenauspital due to a recurrence of tuberculosis.

For health reasons he was allowed to paint for short periods of time only with watercolors and inks and created almost five hundreds of small works on paper.
