Description

modelled as a hollow dog figure with the belly opened, standing foursquare with the head forward, conveying an air of alertness, the round observing eyes with stylized tufts of hair above, the muzzle with long incised whiskers to either side, the ears pointed, the mouth slightly open, wearing an ornamented harness around the neck and down the back with a large ring at the top, the tail curled up against the back haunches, applied with a green glaze stopping just above the short legs revealing the red earthenware body, Japanese wood box

Tsui Gallery of Chinese Art, London, 1991, pl. 14; a third was sold twice in our London rooms, 20th November 1973, lot 122, and 2nd/3rd December 1974, lot 136; and a further example was sold at Christie's London, 20th/21st June 1984, lot 13.
