Shallow Bowl
with a portrait of a woman and painted with VIVA FAMETA BELLA; the reverse with modern collector’s labels
tin-glazed earthenware (maiolica)
diameter: 10 ¾ in.; 27.3 cm.
Painted with the portrait of a woman wearing a décolleté yellow and ochre dress, this bowl is a part of the aesthetic tradition of Bella Donna dishes. Believed to have been used as gifts from suitors to their objects of affection. The present work perhaps depicted the recipient of the gift, with the inscription translating to ' long live beautiful Fameta.'
