Description

Netherlandish, first quarter of the 15th century

Saint Anthony Abbot

alabaster with remains of polychromy; on a red velvet base

50,5cm. high, 19⅞in.

59,5cm. overall, 23⅜ in.

This characterful alabaster figure depicts Saint Anthony Abbot, who is portrayed with his saintly attributes, a book held in his left hand and a small pig depicted at his feet. The carving of the beard, with long individual tresses of hair are finely sculpted with curving lines, and can be compared to a 15th century alabaster head of Saint John the Baptist in the Bayriches National Museum in Munich, which is attributed to the circle of the Master of Rimini, Southern Netherlands (inv. no. 10/35).
