Produced after El Greco's death in 1614, when his son, Jorge Manuel Theotocópuli oversaw workshop production, the present work is a studio variant of the Adoration of the Shepherds altarpiece produced circa 1596-1600 for the Dona María de Aragón collegiate church in Madrid, today in the National Museum of Art of Romania, Bucharest.1 The nocturnal scene is here rendered in reverse, but the theatrical arrangement of the dynamically posed elongated figures and the high-keyed palette are quintessential characteristics of El Greco's late style.
