Painted in Bruges around the turn of the sixteenth century, this panel once formed part of a larger composition depicting the adoration of the Christ Child by the three Magi. The artist adapted certain motifs from works by Hans Memling, among the most important artists in fifteenth-century Bruges, and others, including the Magus's ornate attire, from the painter and manuscript illuminator Gerard David.
