Where acquired by the present owner.
A comparable view by Francesco Tironi that likewise depicts the Church of San Giorgio Maggiore, but with differences in the adjacent buildings and boats in the foreground, is in a private collection. Dario Succi dates that picture to circa 1780.1
Today, Tironi is known primarily as a draughtsman: documented works by the artist include a set of twenty-four engravings by Antonio Sandi (1733-1817), published in 1785.2 While in the past, Tironi has been credited with a number of Venetian view paintings, many of these were later given to the Master of the Langmatt Foundation Views (active Venice circa 1740–1770), or are now thought to have been executed by various anonymous hands. Extant accepted paintings by the artist are therefore rare, rendering the present work an exciting addition to the painter's œuvre.
We are grateful to Charles Beddington for suggesting the attribution to Tironi, based on digital images.
