Giovan Mattista Moroni executed this elegant depiction of the Resurrected Christ early in his career, circa 1545, when the influence of the Venetian painter Titian was most apparent. Intended for private devotion, the small canvas illustrates Christ floating through the air. Situated within a golden-rayed mandorla, he appears to levitate, an impression underscored by his white loincloth and triumphal banner that billow in the divine breeze. The three Maries who had visited Christ’s tomb can be seen at right walking along the winding path that leads to the city of Jerusalem in the distance.
