Aragon’s poems celebrating Chagall and his painting are said to have been the cause of a quarrel, as the poet could not bear that the painter to whom he was giving homage should change his text.

My bitter painter with the smell of almonds
You who paint sleeping lovers
In memory and in oblivion ".
