Yashima Gakutei (1786-1868)

New Year's garland and crescent moon

Edo period, 19th century

 

woodblock print, surimono, embellished with metallic pigment and embossing, signed Gakutei, privately issued, late 1820s, poem by Hakumosha; with collector’s seal of Gerhard Pulverer to the reverse

 

Shikishiban surimono: 19.6 x 18 cm., 7¾ x 7⅛ in.

The poem by Hakumosha has been translated by John T. Carpenter:

 

A New Year’s garland of fresh straw crowns,

Saohime goddess of spring with her tresses of

willow tied with a moon-shaped comb.

yanagi no kami ni

tsuki no sashikushi
