The complete set of The Five Buddhist Precepts (Gokai)

Edo period, 19th century

 

the complete set of five woodblock prints, surimono, embellished with metallic pigment and embossing, from the series The Five Buddhist Precepts (Gokai), four signed Hokkei hitsu (Brush of Hokkei), one signed Hokkei, privately issued; each with collector’s seal of Gerhard Pulverer to verso, and comprising:

 

- Consumption of Alcohol, Prohibited by One of the Buddhist Precepts (Onju)

- Falsehood, Prohibited by One of the Buddhist Precepts (Mogo)

- Adultery and Lewdness, Prohibited by One of the Buddhist Precepts (Jain)

- Destruction of Life, Prohibited by One of the Buddhist Precepts (Sessho)

- Theft and Robbery, Prohibited by One of the Buddhist Precepts (Chuto)


Each shikishiban surimono: each approx. 21 x 18 cm., 8¼ x 7⅛ in.
