Attribué à Torii Kiyonaga (1752-1815), Rouleau de manche, époque Edo, fin du XVIIIe siècle
Gerhard Pulverer (b. 1930)
A masterpiece of shunga by Kiyonaga. The closely-cropped narrow hashira-e format dramatically captures the amorous couples in the throes of passion. The title Sode no maki, or ‘Handscroll for the Sleeve’, suggests that it was designed to be carried furtively inside the sleeve of a kimono.
Similar impressions of the complete set are in the collection of the Museum of Fine Arts, Boston, accession number RES.09.319.
