Michael Ahern was one of the most respected and accomplished visionary leaders in the stage production and music industries, known for producing once-in-a-lifetime live experiences in the U.S. and worldwide. His remarkable career changed the face of large touring productions, bringing creative concepts to life that others deemed impossible.
Michael began his career as the Stage Manager of the original Fillmore East venue in New York and went on to become the Production Coordinator for international tours with recording artists such as The Rolling Stones, Bon Jovi, Michael Jackson, Prince, Bob Dylan, Queen, Paul McCartney & Wings, Madonna, Elton John, Santana, U2, and David Bowie.
The present GMT-Master II was gifted to Michael by David Bowie for his incredible work as Tour Manager after the Glass Spider Tour, in November 1987.
The GMT-Master traces its history back to the mid-1950s, when Pan Am Airlines turned to Rolex to develop a wristwatch pilots could use on long-haul flights to track multiple time zones. Unveiled in 1954, it featured a fourth hand that made one full rotation every 24 hours, and a rotating bezel with a 24-hour scale, allowing the wearer to track two time zones with a flick of the wrist. By solving a complex problem with an elegant solution, the GMT-Master revolutionized watchmaking design and history.
The present example, Reference 16760, was produced between 1982 and 1988. Nicknamed the “Fat Lady” by collectors for its generously enhanced proportions, the enlarged design was necessary to accommodate the new in-house calibre 3085. The “Fat Lady” was also the first model to feature the now-iconic red and black bezel insert, which was immediately dubbed the “Coke,” reminiscent of the world’s most popular soda.
In addition to his work with world-renowned recording artists, Michael also worked extensively with non-profit organizations. He coordinated both Live Aid concerts in Philadelphia and London in 1985, as well as the Conspiracy of Hope tour—six benefit concerts on behalf of Amnesty International—in 1986. Following the September 11 attacks, New York City leaders sought to restore the Manhattan skyline and provide a meaningful commemoration. Michael helped realize this vision by producing Tribute in Light with the 9/11 Memorial & Museum. For one night each year, Tribute in Light sends two beams of light into the New York night sky. The event continues to be produced annually by Ahern Production Services, which carries on Michael's legacy by creating unparalleled experiences for Fortune 500 companies, world-renowned recording artists, and non-profits.
We are delighted to offer the present timepiece with its incredible provenance. The pioneering spirit of Rolex is a fitting accompaniment to Michael's unwavering commitment to excellence, creativity, and the challenge of making the impossible possible.
