The Baignoire is one of Cartier’s most enduring designs, first conceived by Louis Cartier in the early twentieth century and refined into its modern form during the late 1950s. Defined by its elongated oval case, the model exemplifies Cartier’s pursuit of pure line and harmonious proportion. By the late 1960s, Cartier London had begun reinterpreting this elegant shape with a contemporary sensibility, experimenting with new dial colours and case materials that reflected the bold design culture of the era.
The present example, hallmarked for London 1967, was produced by Cartier London and is distinguished by its unusual combination of a white gold case and a deep black dial. Most Baignoire watches of the period were made in yellow gold with silvered dials, making this contrasting execution incredibly rare. It is powered by the manual Jaeger-LeCoultre calibre 845, reflecting the close technical collaboration between Cartier’s London workshop and the Swiss manufacture during this period. This lot presents a notable opportunity to acquire an exceptionally uncommon Cartier London Baignoire.
