Patek Philippe

The Patek Philippe Reference 1463, introduced in 1940, holds the distinction of being the brand’s first water-resistant chronograph. Released just four years after the legendary Reference 130, the 1463 set itself apart with a larger case, a screw-down case back, and round chronograph pushers. With its sporty yet elegant proportions, it remains one of the most desirable vintage Patek Philippe chronographs, highly coveted by collectors.

Produced in yellow gold, pink gold, and stainless steel, the total production of the 1463 is estimated to be fewer than 750 pieces. It can be categorized into three distinct series:

• The first series (until 1945) featured straight, flat lugs, a thick no-step bezel, and a small domed crown.
• The second series (until 1961) introduced heavier lugs that curve downward, a thinner bezel, and a larger crown.
• The third and final series (until approximately 1969) was characterized by a more minimalist dial layout, omitting the outer "chemin de fer" and featuring flatter case bands and lugs.

The present example, made in 1952, belongs to the second series but stands apart from the standard production due to its dial and hands. Unlike most examples, this piece forgoes the traditional rail track and tachymeter scale, prioritizing optimal readability. A rare feature of this watch is the radium-filled hands and indexes, allowing visibility in the dark—an extremely scarce trait among 1463s.

A Reference 1463 with such a dial configuration was unknown until today and might certainly be unique.

Further enhancing its rarity, this timepiece was retailed by the esteemed Zurich-based distributor Beyer, as confirmed by both the Patek Philippe Extract from the Archives and the Beyer Extract. The partnership between Patek Philippe and Beyer Chronometrie is one of the longest-standing and most significant in watchmaking history, dating back to the earliest years of the Geneva-based manufacturer. Here, the Beyer signature, beautifully counterbalancing the Patek Philippe logo, adds another layer of desirability.

The case back bears the 'FB' maker’s mark, denoting Taubert & Fils, one of Geneva’s finest case manufacturers specializing in water-resistant designs. The engraving ‘Vacuum’ further affirms its waterproof construction, a key innovation of its time.

As the Reference 1463 gains increasing recognition among seasoned collectors, fresh-to-market examples such as this one are becoming exceedingly rare. With its unique dial configuration, double signature, and historical significance, this extraordinary piece presents a remarkable opportunity for discerning collectors. 

This example is fresh to the market, having been consigned directly by the family of the original owner—a notable American accountant from the Midwest—where the watch has remained since its purchase from Beyer during a business trip in 1954.
