From the late 1950s Rolex had begun making watches for the middle eastern market, often producing iconic models in special orders for various governments and monarchs. Rolex watches featuring Eastern Arabic numerals on the dial are part of a small group of watches, typically produced in small orders and usually for precious metal Day-date models. The present watch is a reference 1601/8 in yellow gold, and is the first of its kind to auction. Rarer still is the combination of these numerals with a lacquer dial, known as a Stella dial, in a rich off white pink colour.

Offered by the family of the original owner who purchased the watch in Saudi Arabia in 1961, the watch appears to have been serviced on one occasion but retains good proportions and a clean vibrant dial.

Although there are few examples of unique Rolex this is certainly a wildly unusual configuration, likely only produced in a handful of examples.
