In 2005, the manufacture introduced the designation "Patek Philippe Advanced Research Limited Editions" and began to launch limited-edition wristwatches endowed with one or several avantgarde technologies.

The 500-watch edition of the reference 5650 Aquanaut Travel Time is the result of two important innovations created to improve long-term functional integrity. It has an optimized Spiromax® balance spring made of Silinvar® with patented terminal curve and inner boss that ensures greater precision within mechanical watches. The second innovation is a compliant mechanism crafted from conventional horological steel used to set the second time zone in time-zone watches.

This model features a blue dial embossed in the typical fashion and has an aperture at 9 o'clock through which the flexible mechanism with the four crossed leaf springs is clearly visible. In addition to these features, the reference 5650 includes displaying local time, local date, a second time zone, and a day/night indicator for both time zones.
