Patek Philippe introduced the Reference 5131 in 2008, debuting it in yellow gold. Over the years, the Manufacture expanded the collection with a white gold version in 2009, followed by pink gold in 2014 and platinum in 2017, before discontinuing the model in 2021. Renowned as both a horological masterpiece and a work of art, the 5131 features a hand-painted cloisonné enamel dial depicting four continents—Europe, Asia, Africa, and Oceania.

Given the extremely intricate and time-consuming enameling process, Patek Philippe produced only a limited quantity of this reference each year, making it highly coveted among collectors. Even during its production years, the 5131 had a substantial waiting list, as only a handful of master enamelers could craft fewer than 40 dials annually. Since each dial is entirely hand-enameled, no two are exactly alike, adding to the watch's exclusivity and allure.

The beauty of the 5131 runs deeper still, into the conceptual. Platinum, known for its glimmering white colour, is often known as the “coldest” of the precious metals. It is for this reason that several brands reserve “ice blue” coloured dials for their platinum offerings. Thus, there could be no landmass more fitting for the platinum 5131 than the Arctic Circle. To further boost the alluring effect, the 5131 in platinum is also the only configuration of the reference to only be available on full matching bracelet.
