The reference 3970 has gained massive attention from the collecting space in recent years, a bridge between the vintage 2499 and modern 5970, it enjoyed a production from 1986 to 2004. Scholars are fascinated for the wide variety of dials and case materials it was produced in, and created extensive documentation for this one single reference.

The present example can be discovered to be from the second series, with baton numerals and leaf shaped hands. The reference number is now mentioned as 3970"E" on the extract, "E" meaning étanche, French for waterproof. This is an upgrade from the first series of 3970s which features snap on backs, and the second series started using screw down case backs for waterproof, some like the present example even comes with an additional sapphire crystal display back. The present watch retains its original box, papers and case back, and preserved in outstanding condition. The case is pristine with excellent proportions and the hallmarks very crisp. Representing an exemplifying example of the 3970, the present watch is highly collectible and sought after.
