Officine Panerai first partnered with the British Gun & Rifle Making company Purdey in 2002 and has since released several different editions of Luminor Sealand watches. This hunting style case, with it’s protective metal cover over the dial that opens on a hinge, is not only thematically appropriate for a collaboration with a gunmaker, but also provides a large canvas for the hand-engraved animal motifs. Each engraving is first outlined in powdered chalk or magnesium powder, and then hand-engraved with a burin – requiring more than a week of work. The present lot features a beautifully engraved lion to the cover. James Purdey & Sons have built, and engraved, sporting guns in London since 1814.
