Even though the jumping hours complication can very much be called the current “flavour of the month”, few brands can claim to have genuine heritage and historic roots in this eccentric complication, with Cartier being one such brand. Indeed, the first of Cartier’s Tank à Guichets was introduced by Louis Cartier himself almost a century ago in 1928, with the name literally translating to ‘counters’ or ‘windows’, a fitting moniker for the unusual method of time-telling. Still retaining all of the signature elements which make the Tank so revered, but now pairing them with a closed dial, Cartier unknowingly created a timeless masterpiece which looks every bit as avant-garde today as it did back in the previous century.

Throughout the decades since its creation, the Tank à Guichets was made in extremely limited quantities, often on an upon-request basis. This has resulted in a plethora of design differences observable across vintage examples which have surfaced, including variations in size, aperture layout and crown location. This combined with the scarcity and distinct design have resulted in the model becoming extremely collectible and favoured by connoisseurs.

For their grand 150th anniversary in 1997, Cartier decided to bring back the Tank à Guichets design, and for the first time ever manufactured it in a series, limited to just 150 pieces. This anniversary edition marked somewhat of a rebirth of the model, not just within La Maison’s catalogue, but also in the collecting zeitgeist, and the brand went on to introduce several more executions, but none more favoured than the present 1997 anniversary run.
