When famous scientist Alexander Humboldt went on his expeditions in the early 19th century, he relied on the precision timepieces by a certain Johann Heinrich Seyffert in order to calculate coordinates and other scientific measurements. Seyffert was the first watchmaker to establish the fundamentals of precision timekeeping in Saxony, thus laying the foundation for A. Lange & Söhne’s endeavours today. Therefore, it felt quite fitting for the company to create a wristwatch inspired by Seyffert’s pocket chronometers.

The Seyffert No. 93 strikingly split the dial into three overlapping areas displaying the minutes, hours and seconds respectively. This non-orthodox design was directly adapted into the reference 760.032. Additionally, the watch is named in honour of Richard Lange, scientist and one of the company’s founding fathers, further cementing the watch’s historic embedding.

As embodiment of Richard Lange’s vision, the present watch houses one of the most progressive and intricate movements of its time, the calibre L072.1. It includes a fusée-and-chain transmission, as well as a one-minute tourbillon, both allowing for an incredibly effective way to improve the accuracy of the watch, while further featuring the patented zero-reset mechanism. The movement is beautifully exposed, with the tourbillon cage simultaneously acting as the subsidiary seconds dial.

Adding to the intrigue of the watch is the swinging hour dial: In order to not obstruct the view on the inner workings of the watch, the overlapping part of the hour dial retracts after passing the 12 o’clock position and only appears again when reaching 6 o’clock. This playful gimmick further enhances the watch’s technical magnificence, reaching a level of horological complexity and prowess only very few watchmakers can achieve.
